July 2011, Former Kentuckian Professes Final Vows as a Sister of the Congregation of St. Joseph

Springfield, Ky., native Sister Mary Jo Curtsinger, CSJ, professed her final vows to become a Sister of the Congregation of St. Joseph on July 30. Sister Mary Jo attended St. Dominic School and graduated from Immaculate School, Owensboro Catholic High School (1975) and Murray State University with a B. A. degree in psychology and sociology. Her parents, Rosella Irene and Thomas Alton Curtsinger, Sr. reside in Owensboro.

Sister Mary Jo joins an impressive list of women who became Sisters of St. Joseph in LaGrange Park, Ill., since the order was established there in 1899. The sisters are an extension of the original Sisters of St. Joseph founded in LePuy, France, in 1650 with their mission “to serve the dear neighbor that all people may be united with God and with one another.” That mission is still very much alive in the hearts of more than 715 sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph located in seven states and Japan.

After moving to South Carolina, Sister Mary Jo worked as a school psychologist for 14 years and became very involved in parish and diocesan ministry at St. Joseph Parish in Columbia, S.C. Her interest in theological studies grew and she attended the Catholic Theological Union of Chicago (CTU) where she earned a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree. She became the director of the Biblical Study and Travel Program at CTU and spent months in the biblical lands of Israel/Palestine, Greece, Turkey, Jordan and Egypt. She was received as a CSJ candidate in 2002, then as a novice in August of 2003, and she professed her first vows in August of 2005.
