Elementary 4-6 Campus Newsletter

April 11, 2008

Welcome back from Spring Break! We hope our families had a fun and safe Spring Break.

ocsParent Alert

Next week all students will begin CAT-6 testing.  Please read the attached information for tips on how to make sure your child is prepared.

ocsRequest for the 2008-09 School Year

Due to many factors, we will no longer take teacher request for students.  Please read the attached explanation.

ocsACRE Test Results for 2007-2008 Students

In February 2008, all fifth grade students took the National Catholic Education Association’s Assessment of Catechesis/Religious Education (NCEA ACRE).  This summary, provided by the ACRE program, reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the students’ comprehension of various religious and catechetical topics.  The topics fall under four major divisions of the Catechism-Part One: Profession of Faith (Creed), Part Two: The Celebration of the Christian Mystery (Liturgy and Sacraments), Part Three: Life in Christ (Morality), and Part Four: Christian Prayer.

We are pleased to report that once again our students scored above the established national average in all categories.  This is great news for our students, parents, and parish priests.  The attached graph summarize the results.

ocsLenten Service Project

As you well know the students participated in the “Zap the Penny” contest to raise money for the organization Food for the Poor.  The students raised approximately $1,959.80.  Ms. Branch’s class received the highest amount of positive points.  Congratulations on a job well done.

ocsCafeteria News

Next Friday we will be serving Little Caesar’s Pizza for lunch.  Please fill out the enclosed form and return it to school by Tuesday, April 15th.  If your child is going to order extra pieces of pizza, please make sure the money is in his/her account.  For your child’s account information, contact Ms. Becky.

ocsMark You Calendar

The Coca-Cola orders must be pick-up on Saturday, April 19th, at the Coca-Cola plant on Daniels Lane, 9 AM – 12 Noon.

Media Center News

Headphones are needed at school.  All 4th and 5th and 6th graders are supposed to have a pair of personal headphones to use in the computer labs.  There are very few extra headphones floating around in the labs, but enough if one or two people in a class forget theirs or someone’s breaks.  Please check to see that your child has a pair of headphones that work at school.  Even if your child had working headphones at the beginning of the year, they may not work now.  Headphones are prone to breaking especially when they go through the typical wear and tear school use.  Also talk to your child about the proper care of headphones as many of them are chewing on the cords, or twisting them into gnarled impossible knots.

ocsTitle I Meeting

There will be a meeting for all parents of Tile I students on April 23 from 6:00-7:00 p.m.  There will be food, fun, and lots of great door prizes.  More information will be available at a later date.

Theatre Workshop

The Theatre Workshop of Owensboro will be holding auditions for “Junie B. Jones and her Big Fat Mouth” for students in grades 3-6 on April 19th.  Students in grade 6 may also audition for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”  For more information, please contact Teresa Wills at 302-5560.

 Used Uniform Sale

The first day for students to wear shorts will be next Wednesday, April 16th.  The PTO will have a Used Uniform Sale Saturday from 9:00-12:00 in the K-3 Campus Cafeteria.  This would be a good time to purchase uniforms to get your child through the rest of the school year.

There are a few seats available for this exclusive pilgrimage led by Spiritual Directors Ursuline, Sister Marietta Wethington and Associate, Fr. LOOK WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE 4-6 CAMPUS

Congratulations to the Owensboro Catholic Winterguard on their success over Spring Break.  The Winterguard placed first at both the John Hardin and Elizabethtown competitions.  This past Saturday, the Winterguard won the Gold Medal in their class at the Tri-State Circuit Championships at Ryle HS.  Astacia Hubbard, one of our sixth graders, was part of the Winterguard.

Mrs. Hardesty/Ms. Smith’s science classes have been studying the Earth’s layers.  The students simulated the layers using graham crackers, crème cheese, and chocolate eggs.

In math, Mrs. Hardesty/Ms. Smith’s class has been studying measurement.  They explored perimeter by tracing the outline of their hand and foot, then reached an estimated length using yarn.  Finally, they changed the length to centimeters
