'Petals' by Emily Marshal - 4th GradeWhy Flowers Have Petals

By:  Emily Marshall 4C

A long time ago when God was creating the earth, He made the trees, rivers, grasses and flowers.  But He made flowers with just the ordinary yellow goldish center.  After creating was done (a couple decades later) God said, “I think the world needs some color.”  So He made the rivers purple, red, and green.  Then God thought that didn’t look right.  One angel named Petalis suggested to add soft oval like material to the flowers.  God liked that idea so He took soft material in oval shapes.

He and his angels painted the material.  Then his angels stuck them to the flowers all over the world.  God finally liked his creation.  Petalis asked, “What is your material going to be called?”  God thought and then answered, “Petals, it comes from your name after that great idea!  Everyone was happy!  This is why flowers have petals.

Future Problem Solving Team MembersFuture Problem Solving Team

On December 6, OCES 4-6 Campus Future Problem Solving team competed in the Junior FPS State Qualifying Competition.  We had three groups of four students each.  Out of the 42 school groups that competed across Kentucky, only 19 qualified.  We are very proud to say that all three of our teams made it!  We will be sending the team to the state FPS competition on March 15.  The students will also be eligible to compete individually on March 17.  The top two FPS teams and the top individual problem solver in Kentucky are invited to attend the International FPS Conference in June at Michigan State University to compete with students from all over the world.

The team members are sixth graders; Kyle Alvey, Caroline Augenstein, Kelsey Conkright, Marty Crowe, Stephanie Hayden, Ashley Mattingly, and Meredith Whitehouse; fifth graders, Jack Padgett, Madeline Rafferty, Adney Rakotoniaina, Laurine Scott, and Audrey Wright; and fourth grader Payton Ford.  Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they prepare over the next month.  And wish them LUCK!
