ocsCatholic Schools Week 2008

Catholic Schools Week will be celebrated this year during the week of January 28-February 1.  This week is a time set aside each year to celebrate what makes Catholic education special.  During the week, we focus on the high-quality, faith-filled education our schools provide.  We honor everyone who contributes to their success-not only students, families, faculty and staff, but also volunteers, community supporters, and national leaders.

This year’s CSW theme, “Catholic Schools Light the Way,” combines the concepts of God as the light of the world and the light of knowledge that our schools kindle in students.  This year’s theme represents the special role of Catholic schools and teachers in lighting the way through a faith-based education that supports the whole child in learning about and leading a fulfilled life.  Our students, in turn, will “light the way” to a brighter future through leadership in their communities, businesses and families.

ocsOur book fair will kick-off Catholic Schools Week.  We are in need of some volunteers to help organize and set-up our book fair.  Please read the information and see if you could help with this event.  Next week more information will be sent home concerning the rest of our activities for Catholic Schools Week.

ocsCafeteria News

On Friday, January 18 we will be having Little Caesar’s Pizza for lunch.  Please fill out the attached form and return by Tuesday, January 15.  Remember extra pieces may not be charged.  Please make sure your child has a positive account balance.  If you have any questions concerning your child’s account, please contact Ms. Becky, our cafeteria manager.

ocsTransportation Subsidy Program

The transportation subsidy program is now in its 14th year and provides a safe ride to and from school for many of our students.  The legislature wanted this safety program and it works extremely well, but in recent years, funding has not kept up with the need.  There has been a shortfall of funding for the past 8 years.  If legislature does not adequately fund the program, the parents of non-public school students may have to make up the difference.

Please contact your local legislators and let them know how important busing is to our students.  To contact legislators:

1. www.lrc.state.ky.us

2. Click on “Who’s my legislator?”

3. Click on “Members by county.”

A list of the Senate and House members is provided, with contact information and (for some) an email link.  Your help would be greatly appreciated.

ocsWKU Super Saturdays

The Center for Gifted Studies at Western Kentucky University is offering Winter Super Saturdays on February 2, 9, 16, and 23.  If you are interested in this program for your child, additional information is available in the school office.

Happy Birthday !!

LOOK WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE 4-6 CAMPUS!

ocsStudents in Mr. Calhoun’s sixth grade Science classes are shown constructing models called “Pizza Box Ovens.”  The models are part of an investigation into solar energy as a possible alternative to fossil fuels.  Later the students will test their “ovens,” record the data and publish their findings.

ocsMr. Randy Lanham visited our school this week. He is a guest artist from the International Bluegrass Museum through the BITS (Bluegrass in the Schools) program. He shared much knowledge about bluegrass music and the art of fiddle music with the students.  Each student was able to practice these skills on their own violin. It was an amazing experience for our students.
ocsMrs. Hardesty’s fifth graders have been studying troublesome verbs.  Each student developed a chart outlining the present, past, and past participle forms of six verbs.
