Accelerated Reader
The Accelerated Reader program (AR) at Owensboro Catholic Elementary is a program in which students read a book and take a computer-based test. Accelerated Reader is fun for all kids. Each book is worth a given number of points. If they make a 100% they will earn all the possible points, otherwise the points are pro-rated based on the number of test questions answered correctly. Accelerated Reader helps students with reading comprehension.
Students are expected to read books within their reading range and level. The suggested Point Goals are listed below, but teachers may modify the goal based on each individual student.
Students must have an average of 80% on AR tests for the test to count.
AR Point Goals by Grade Level:
Kindergarten Individual reading logs are kept and goals set for the # of books read at home. Kindergarten students DO NOT take AR Tests.
1st Grade 1st grade students will not begin the AR program until the 2nd quarter, on October 15. The goal is 5 points per quarter for a total of 15 Points for the year.
2nd Grade 5 Points 1st quarter and 10 Points 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarter for a total
of 35 Points
3rd Grade 10 Points per quarter for a total of 40 Points
AR Milestone Rewards
• 50 Points- Receive 5 Holy Cards
• 100 Points- Lead morning or afternoon prayers on the intercom/ or help the principal program the electronic Birthday Board.
• 200 Points- Lunch with the principal (with 2 friends)
• 300 Points- Extra 20 minute recess (with 3 friends)
• 400 Points- 30 minutes of out of class for “Games” with the principal (with 3 friends)
• 500 Points- Lunch at Pizza Hut with the Principal
• 600 Points- $10 Books-a-Million Gift Card
• School Wide Reward- If the school collectively reaches 10,000 points, the entire school will be rewarded with a picnic to Legion Park at the end of the school year.
Teachers will plan incentives and rewards within their classroom for students who reach individual goals each 9-weeks.
